MRP Labeling for Imported Goods
General information only — not legal advice.
Why imported products are treated differently
Pre-packaged goods imported into India are generally expected to carry the same core declarations as domestically packed goods — MRP, net quantity, manufacturing details, consumer care — plus information specific to the fact that the product originates elsewhere.
Declarations commonly expected on imported products
- Name and address of the importer
- Country of origin (or country of manufacture/assembly, as applicable)
- Common or generic name of the commodity
- Net quantity in metric units
- Month and year of import (in addition to, or in place of, manufacturing date, depending on the specific rule applied)
- MRP inclusive of all taxes, in Indian Rupees
- Consumer-care details for grievance redressal within India
Practical notes
- Re-labeling before sale. Imported products are commonly re-labeled with a compliant sticker after customs clearance and before they reach retail, since the original manufacturer's label often won't include Indian-specific declarations like importer details or Rupee MRP.
- Country of origin should be unambiguous. State the actual country of manufacture, not just where the product was shipped from.
- E-commerce listings often mirror label requirements. Marketplaces increasingly expect country-of-origin and importer information in the listing itself, not just on the physical label — see our seller guides for marketplace-specific notes.
Confirm before you printImport-related labeling requirements are one of the areas most likely to have category-specific exceptions and periodic amendments — verify current requirements for your specific product and import route before finalizing packaging.
